(Very fitting, as Chris is currently watching Back to the Future)
So, it turns out Chris’ insides aren’t ready for any type of food – soft solids or not. Dr. Liu ordered a CT scan yesterday, which showed that his ileum wasn’t moving much of anything through it. That’s why he’s having so much pain and bloating after eating.
Ileum
The ileum is the last and longest section of the small intestine. Here the walls of the small intestine begin to thin and narrow, and blood supply is reduced. Food spends the most time in the ileum, where the most water and nutrients are absorbed.
Thankfully, Chris was feeling a bit better before I left him to go home last night, even better when I got home, and much better this morning when we FaceTimed. When I got to the hospital today around 11 am, he had a smile on his face, which felt like 100 bricks being removed from my shoulders.
This morning Chris drank a clear Ensure, which his body seems to have processed well, and now he’s on to a Kate Farms “sole source nutrition” shake. Please keep your fingers crossed for him on that one.
We haven’t seen Dr. Liu yet today, although it sounds like he typically comes in on the weekend. I’ve given up on projecting when he’ll be discharged and an now focusing my energy on his body processing liquids without any issues.
It moves between a minute-by-minute or day-by-day situation around here, without much warning. That’s for sure.
