Day 1: So far, so good!

Hello everyone!

Just a quick update to let you know Chris is doing really well.

He didn’t get much sleep last night as the nurse needed to come in every 45 minutes to check his vitals, his incisions, etc. Dr. Liu came in this morning and was surprised Chris is tolerating liquids as well as he is, and… there might be food in Chris’ near future. (And as I was typing they just ordered some oatmeal for him 😋 He’s super excited about that!) It was also good to hear that he’ll be on the epidural today and tomorrow, as that seems to be controlling his pain really well.

OT and PT came in after Dr. Liu. They set up a recliner, had Chris do some muscle strength tests, worked on getting Chris out of bed, and helped him with a few steps using a walker. Unfortunately, the body movement made Chris nauseous and really hot so they sat him back down and the OT said that those symptoms are likely due to the pain meds). At least he’s in the recliner now and is happy to be out of bed for a while!

I think he’s “enjoying” (that’s not the right word, but you know…) the forced downtime and he’s currently binging Lego Build Masters. Binging a TV show is not something Chris does in his normal life, so that’s one positive of this adventure.

However, I did notice on my way down to the cafeteria that Chris is on the Transplant & Major Surgery floor. It’s tough to know that. We knew this was a major surgery, but to see it in print makes it real. And to reinforce the realness, Chris’ nurse was just in and said he’s her “most serious” patient. Go big or go home?

Going home has not been mentioned yet, but we’re here until they’re ready to get rid of us. Seeing Chris get nauseous and hot when he was standing up was a little peek into what being at home might be like. Based on that, I’m glad they are not kicking us out in the next few days.

Thank you ALL for your comments, love, and support.

So happy to see this picture of Chris sort of smiling. Thanks for the updates. Will keep sending healing energy your way! All the best from the COS crew.

  2. Well I think that’s pretty darn amazing! And being on the transplants and major surgery floor means you get a lot more nursing attention than if you were just your run of the mill “hum drum” surgery case. It’s a good thing! Tell that eager beaver of yours not to overdo it. He’ll be back at the grind soon enough!

I just love you both! I love your transparency, your authenticity, your forthrightness and your incredible ability to express yourselves. I’m so glad Chris is doing so well. I have a lot of satisfaction with my move to North Carolina but one regret is that I will not be there when Chris comes home to make chicken soup or to spell you, Jenny–either to do a grocery trip for you or just to let you go to the store if you want! Or take a walk to the mailbox. I know there are so many people who love you and will jump at the chance to support.

Oatmeal is such a great food. Go, Chris!
